ImAc Immersive Accessibility

What are end user expectations from VR media environments?

ImAc (Immersive Accessibility GA 761974) has defined a user-centric design methodology to help defining technological requirements and developments in the project. During the 30-month project, the first three months are dedicated to understand the needs of end users regarding accessibility services in immersive media. The services developed will be subtitling, audio subtitling, audio description, and sign language interpreting. Today six users met to carry out a focus group at Universitat Aut貌noma de Barcelona (UAB).

From a bottom up approach the group started by looking at some examples of the popular TV programme Pol貌nia (http://www.ccma.cat/tv3/polonia/polonia-en-360/fitxa/113000/) produced by the Catalan Broadcaster TVC, who is also a partner in the project. 聽They then listened to an object-based sound demo produced by another project partner, IRT (https://lab.irt.de/demos/object-based-audio/interactive/). In this demo you can rotate or change the listener orientation by positioning the cursor above the listener icon and moving it. They finally discussed various items related to audio description and audio subtitling in immersive environments. The Catalan NGO Assemblea per la Diversitat (http://assembleadiversitat.blogspot.com.es) collaborated with low sighted testers. Three audio describers and one technical expert also took part in the focus group.

Next Tuesday another focus group will take place in Catalonia at TVC HQ and immersive subtitles will be the object of discussion. Focus groups will also be organised in Berlin by the public broadcaster Rbb and in London, organised by the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB).

The project, led by Sergi Fern谩ndez at i2CAT, has the participation of UAB, the Catalan Media Corporation (CCMA) Anglat猫cnic, University of Salford, Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (Rbb), Institut f眉r Rundfunktechnik Gmbh (IRT), Motion Spell and 聽(RNIB).

The EC in this ICT call funded three projects focusing on Media Accessibility. The other two are: Connect4ALL, led by Giacomo Inches (Fincons, Switzerland), looking at solutions for Sign Language production and distribution (http://content4all-project.eu) and EasyTV, led by Federico 脕lvarez (UPM, Spain), looking at the interaction of end users with accessibility services (http://easytvproject.eu).
