For details of the specific subjects taught within this ambit on the MA, please see the Programme.

The specialisation in Multilingualism and the Acquisition of English provides advanced training in English language and linguistics with a focus on multilingualism which is understood as the teaching, acquisition and knowledge of English structure and use by speakers of other languages.

The themes of the optional courses are intended to give students a background in different aspects of multilingualism and English language such as phonology and lexical access (6 credits), morphology and syntax in second language acquisition (6 credits), sociolinguistics of bilingual and multilingual practices (6 credits), multilingualism in the mind (6 credits), as well as the practical application of this knowledge to teaching CLIL (6 credits) and methodologies and new technologies for teaching purposes (6 credits).

Please note that not all of these subjects are offered every year (depending on a variety of factors, certain courses are rotated).

Obligatory courses on qualitative and quantitative research methods (9 credits) and advanced academic abilities (15 credits) provide the practical know-how in order to undertake research for the final Master´s dissertation (12 credits) in the student’s area of interest.

Students usually aim to complete the MA in one academic year, though it can easily be taken part-time over a period of two years.

Classes are held over both academic semesters from Mondays to Fridays from the end of September/beginning of October till the end of May.

There is a break between the two semesters.
