The ROMAE project was part of the “Natural stone for cultural heritage: local resources with a global impact” International Conference, held in Prague at the magnificient Premostratensian Monastery at Strahov (Czech Republic) in September 19th-22th, 2017, with an oral communication untitled  “Marble resources in the NW of Spain: a scarce and poor-quality stone?” and co-authored with Anna Gutiérrez García-M., Pilar Lapuente, Isabelle Pianet, Hernando Royo, Rémy Chapoulie and Silvia González Soutelo.

In this contribution, we have addressed the search of good quality stone and in particular marbles that took place in Roman times and possible in the Early Medieval period as well in the northwestern corner of the Iberian Peninsula. We also presented an overview of the landscape exploitation and the marble quarries we have located during the last years and its main features in relation to extraction techniques, topographical location and facilities of transport of the materials to other destinations.
