Week 9.5 (April 28 & 30)

Posted in General by 0000951 |

Hi Everyone,

This is our last full week of class.  Here is what we´ll be doing:

Oral presentations:

Monday:  1.  Marcos & Rosa                2.  Mª Àngels

Wednesday:  Alba

Dossier:Page 36:  Do 3b.

Page 37:  4a, 5a (make suggestions yourself), 6a.

Page 38:  Read a, b, qand do 1.3

We might do a bit more, but I´ll let you know on Monday.

FINAL EXAM:  Remember, May 5th will be the final exam.  You´ll have to do a writing part (45 min) and a reading-grammar-vocabulary part (30-40 min).  Then, on May 12th we´ll meet to go over the exam.  IT IS AN EXAM TO CHECK YOUR RELATIVE PROGRESS, FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE COURSE UNTIL NOW.  So, each one of you will be measured in that context, not all together.

Have a nice weekend.

Week 8.5, a short week (April 23rd)

Posted in General by 0000951 |

Hi Everyone,

As good scientists, you can understand the “8.5”.  For this day, I´d like to do the following:

1. Go over the exercise of “Linkers”, which you will find in my other blog “The (Nearly) Final Frontier, which is a link on ours.  Go to the “Menu” column and then find “Grammar Explanations”.  The exercises are in two documents: Linkers Parts 3 & 4.  Do those for today.

2. Dossier:  Please make sure you do page 33, part 5b,c,d,  page 34, part 15a,b,c and page 35, part 1a,b.

3. Elizabeth will do her oral presentation.

Have a GREAT Spring Break!  See you on 23.04.

Week 8 (April 7 & 9)

Posted in General by 0000951 |

Hi Everyone,

Last week before Spring Break!  Here are the people giving their presentations for this week.  You may bring popcorn and Coke if you wish! 🙂

Monday:   1.  Daniel    2.   Natalia

Wednesday:      1.  Selene and Katia       2.  Anna

Please do the following work in the dossier:  First, look over pages 72-76 (expressions to use in different types of conversations.).  We´ll begin by going over any questions you have about these expressions.  Then, do pages 31(a,c), 32 (e,h), 33 (5a:  this is about LINKERS!  Look on the other blog, in the Grammar Explanation section, for reviewing linkers).  If there´s time on Wednesday, we can begin page 34 (15a,b,c).  I´ll try to have a video for Wednesday, to watch and discuss.

Thanks, and have a fun weekend.

Chuck

Week 7 (March 31 & April 2)

Posted in General by 0000951 |

Hi Everyone,

First, here are the people who will be doing an oral presentation this week:

Monday:  1. Ana María     2.  Andrea & Patricia

Wednesday:  1. Camila   2.  Sergio & Marta

Remember:  7 minutes per presentation for one person, 14 min for two people, and after the second one we´ll do a little feedback.

Ok.  Now, for Monday I want you to find and bring to class a CONCLUSION from some article.  I want to work with that in class.  Please, everyone bring one!

For the dossier, do the following pages:

p. 24:  2, 4

p. 25:  5, 6, 7

p. 26:  all

p. 27:  read and be prepared to discuss.  **There will be a paper on this to be given to me on April 7th.

p. 29:  all

The work in the dossier is for BOTH DAYS.  We won´t do all of the above on Monday.

Have a good weekend,

Chuck

Week 6 (March 24 & 26)

Posted in General by 0000951 |

Hi Everyone,

Well, this week is the first week of the second half of our course.  Now, we´ll be focusing more on writing and speaking (formally) than we have done in the past.

For this week, do the following pages in the dossier:

page 21: 2a and 3a, page 22:  4b,c e, page 23:  a,b,c

page24:  2, 4, page 25:  5,6,7, page 26:  all

Obviously, this is for both classes, not just Monday.  Also, and for the next several classes, look over pages 60-71.  These pages deal with how to write reports and articles.  You DON´T have to do any exercises yet, just read over the theory.

On Monday, remember that you must give me a formal letter.

See you on Monday.  Have a very nice weekend.

For Monday, DO page 15, parts 1 & 2, page 16, part 2a, page 17, part 6a.

For Wednesday, DO page 18, parts g & h.

Also, for Wednesday, watch the talk given by BARRY SCHWARTZ, called “The Paradox of Choice“, which is in the TED website.  We´ll discuss it, so be prepared to talk about the main points and some of the examples he gives.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Week 4 (March 10 & 12)

Posted in General by 0000951 |

Hi Everyone,

For this week, first we´ll answer any questions on “Collocations”, then finish the listening exercise we began on last Wednesday.  I´ll try to put this one, and some others, on our blog, but it might take me a while.  In the meantime, I´ll give you some listening-comprehension work from the links we have in our blog, or perhaps from another of my blogs which does have some listenings on it:  blogs.uab.cat/advancedenglishc1/    I´ll let you know.

In the dossier, we´ll be working on pages 9,10,11 & 13.  Have a great weekend and I´ll see you on Monday.

Week 3 (March 3 & 5)

Posted in General by 0000951 |

Hi Everyone,

The basic plan for this week is to do some listening, speaking, reading and vocabulary.  So, here´s my plan for Monday and Wednesday:

Dossier- – page 1, 1c&d (listening); page 3, 3a,b&c; page 4, all

Also, in the dossier, READ pages 5,6,7 & 8, which talk about “collocation”.  If we have any extra time, we´ll do something from outside of the dossier, perhaps a video or some other listening activity.

Have a wonderful weekend.  See you next month!

Week 2 (Feb. 24 & 26)

Posted in General by 0000951 |

Hi Everyone,

For Monday, we´ll definitely go over the articles exercises and I´ll hand back your compositions and grammar diagnostic test and we´ll comment on them.

Please begin using the Dossier:  use the numbers which are circled, on the lower right of the page.  Those are the page numbers I´ll be referring to.

Do page 1 of the dossier, Ex. 1a and b.  On page 2, do Ex. 1 “Are you a creative thinker?” and Ex. 2a,c of  Grammar.  That´s probably all we´ll do for Monday.

For Wednesday, do page 3 of the dossier, Ex. 3a,b. and page 4, Ex. 4a,b,e.  Watch the following report on 60 Minutes (cbsnews.com/60-minutes/): Topics  Health & Sciencs–Sex Matters:Drugs Can Affect Sexes Differently.  It lasts around 13 minutes.  Take notes of the main points and we´ll talk about it in groups.

That´s about all for now.  Have a good weekend.

Week 1 (Feb. 17 & 19)

Posted in General by 0000951 |

Hi Everyone,

As the idiot atom says, “Welcome” to this course.  Today, and possibly Wednesday, we´ll be doing some general things so that I can see what you can do and what I need to prepare so that you can all improve your various skills in English.

Please look at this blog every week to see what we´ll be doing from one week to another…AND ATTEND CLASS!  I can´t stress enough that students of languages can only improve certain skills if they attend class, principally speaking skills.  If you can´t attend, let me know by e-mail and I can help you stay up with the rest.

I´d like all of you to look over the following grammar explanations of ARTICLES (the, a, an, “nothing”).  I´ll be giving you a photocopy of some exercises to see how you do with them.

ARTICLES 04

ARTICLES 01

ARTICLES 02

ARTICLES 03

For Wednesday´s class, I want you to watch the following video, which you can find on TED.COM.   You have the link to TED in the “Listening” section to the right.   The video is called “Print your own Medicine” and it is given by Lee Cronin.  We´ll talk about his idea and what you think about it.  Then we´ll explore other ideas you might have which may come from your fields, or any field.
