Welcome to the online version of the Interuniversity Style Guide for Writing Institutional Texts in English (Manual d’estil interuniversitari per a la redacció de textos institucionals en anglès), presented in this
searchable format for the UAB community by the Language Service.
The original pdf of this guide is available through the UAB’s Dipòsit Digital de Document at this link.
The current paper edition of the guide (third edition, Jan. 2018), produced and maintained by the Language Quality Work Group of the Vives Network of Universities, in which the UAB Language Service participates. is available in pdf format here.
The content of this online guide is taken from the current edition of the Guide,
The Guide aims to facilitate inter-university communication and improve the quality of the institutional English-language documents that we produce for international readers. It is also aimed at helping our community to strengthen its knowledge of the English language and acquire the linguistic competence in English that is widely considered to be necessary.
Loosely modelled on existing style manuals (including the English Style Guide of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Translation and The Chicago Manual of Style), the Guide is organised into different sections addressing specific and general aspects of language style. These sections have been repeated in this online adaptation of the Guide.

We hope that you find this guide to be practical, informative and easy to use; above all, we hope that it makes a solid contribution to helping you in your writing needs.
The Xarxa Vives Interuniversity Style Guide for Writing Institutional Texts in English received an Interlingua 2012 grant from the Generalitat de Catalunya, which we most gratefully acknowledge.
