Prof.  Morata was a graduate in Economics (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 1975) and Law (Universitat de Barcelona, 1975) and took his PhD at the European University Institute of Florence (1986) as the first Spanish doctor. Since 1990 he has been successively associate professor and professor in the Political Science and Administration Department at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He held a Chair Jean Monnet Ad Personam in European Political Integration since 2005 until 2014.

From 1997 to 2007 he coordinated the MA Programme in Public Management and Sustainable Development at the Department of political Science (UAB). From 2004 to 2009 he was responsible for the European Studies University Institute (IUEE) at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and coordinated the MA programmes in European Integration and European Development Cooperation Policies. Since 2009, he coordinated the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence MERITER on Territorial Cooperation in the Mediterranean (2009-2013) at the University Institute of European Studies (UAB).

As a visiting Professor, he has lectured at the universities of Florence, Bologna, Bremen, California (Davis), Nanjing, Buenos Aires (Bologna University Centre), Celaya and Veracruzana (Mexico), Rabat, Galatasaray (Istanbul), Institut d’Etudes Politiques  in Paris, Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de Mexico (ITAM) and the Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing. He belongs also to the editorial boards of several international Journals and carries out peer reviews for the Spanish and the Catalan universities agencies (ANECA and AGAUR).

As a researcher, he has participated in a number of projects and research networks at the Catalan, Spanish and European level, dealing with European governance, sustainable development, the environment and cohesion policies.

His publications record consists of 6 volumes, 18 edited or co-edited volumes, 41 chapters and 32 articles, working-papers and monographies in English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Catalan and Chinese, most of them related to European integration.
