Visiting the doctor

Idioma: anglès
Nivell: A2 / B1 (nivell 1 i 2)
Destresa: parla

Communicative Objectives:
This conversation will help you to learn:
– How to talk with your boss when you can’t go to work.
– How to describe the way you feel when talking with a doctor
– How to buy and ask for medicines at the chemist

Yesterday night when you left your office you realised it was raining and you didn’t have an umbrella so you had to walk 35 minutes under the rain. When you arrived at home you were completely wet. Today, you don’t feel well enough so you cannot go to work. You have the flu, you feel dizzy and so on.

Phone your boss and tell him you are not going to work because you are ill. Then, go to the doctor and tell him how you feel and why you feel like this (explain what happened yesterday night). Finally, go to the chemist and buy some medicines if you want to feel better.

– Time expressions (yesterday, at night, today…)
– Buying expressions (I want…please, Could you give me….please…?)
– Feeling expressions (I feel sick, I feel dizzy, I have a headache…)

Idioma: anglès
Nivell: B2.2 / C1.1 (nivell 5 i 6)
Destresa: parla

Communicative objectives:

This activity presents you with a hypothetical situation and asks you to consider what you would do were you in that situation. Completing this exercise will help you express your opinions orally, acquire new vocabulary and use more elevated grammatical structures.

Your aunt has Alzheimer’s and now lives in a nursing home, where people can take care of her 24-hours a day. Whenever you visit her, she demands to know why you never come to see her and sometimes she even cries. The reality is that you have been visiting her weekly since she was put in the “home.” How do you respond to her, both verbally and in your future actions, ie. do you continue to visit her?

Alzheimer’s disease: a degenerative disease of the central nervous system characterized especially by premature senile mental deterioration.
taken from Mish, F. (Ed.). (1988). Webster’s Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary. Springfield, MA: Merriam-Webster, Inc.

Before engaging in this simulation, look in the dictionary and/or thesaurus for necessary vocabulary. You might like to check the Merriam Webster Visual dictionary (Health section). If working with a partner, arguing opposing views may make for a more interesting and stimulating conversation.
