Article: Going to a Job Interview

Communitative Objective: the purpose of this activity is to improve your reading skills and vocabulary about a specific topic as well as to be able to talk and discuss about the ideas of a given text.

Task: Read the article attached to the activity.  First write down all the words in the article that you did not understand and use this website to find the definitions.  After you are done reading, discuss about the article’s main points with a partner.  You might like to use the questions at the end of the article to help guide your conversation if you have trouble.

What makes a “work of art”?

Communicative objectives:

The objective of this activity is that you learn how to:
– Express opinions.
– Make comparisons.

Situation:
Someone has asked you to have a look at some works of art and decide whether they can be considered ‘art’ or not.

Task:
Work in pairs. Discuss and decide from the document attached which pictures can be considered a ‘work of art’ and which not. You should give at least 2 reasons for each picture.

Then, you can ask each other the following questions:

Which work of art from the list do you like the most? Why?
Do you have a favourite artist? Why do you like his/her art?
What makes something a “work of art”?

Grammar:

– Comparatives and Superlatives adjectives.
– Present tense (Present Simple or Present Continuous)
– Past tense (Past Simple or Present Perfect)
– Structures expressing preference: like, dislike, prefer, rather…

Vocabulary:

– Types of works of art: painting, sculpture, portrait, landscape, artistic installation, photograph, montage, collage…
– Adjectives related to art: abstract/ figurative, modern/ traditional, realistic/ non-realistic/ surrealistic…
– Adjectives to express opinion: unique, extremely beautiful, touching, expensive, thought-provoking, powerful…

Telephone or e-mail?

Communicative objectives:
The objective of this activity is that you learn how to:

-Express likes and opinions about different subjects
-Agree or disagree with somebody else’s opinion
-Speak fluently

Situation:
You run across a friend that you have not seen for a long time and you chat for a while. When you say goodbye, s/he says that s/he will give you a ring, but you prefer to use the e-mail. As a result, you start a discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of these two ways of communicating.

Task:
Support your preferences, and argue for or against one of the two ways of exchanging information.

Grammar:
-Verbs for expressing opinion (e.g.: think, believe, admit, seem, be sure, etc.)
-Superlative adjectives (e.g.: the …-est, the most …, the best, the worst, etc.)
-Quantifier adjectives (e.g.: so much, so, etc.)
-Conjunctions and linkers (e.g.: consequently, hence, thus, therefore, however, nevertheless, but, although, whereas, because, since, etc.)

Vocabulary:
-Adjectives for qualifying activities.
