Article: From Night Owl to Early Bird

Communitative Objective: The purpose of this activity is to improve your reading skills and vocabulary about a specific topic as well as to be able to talk and discuss about the ideas of a given text.

Task: Read the article attached to the activity.  First write down all the words in the article that you did not understand and use this website to find the definitions.  After you are done reading, discuss about the article’s main with a partner.  You might like to use the questions at the end of the article to help guide your conversation if you have trouble.

What makes a “work of art”?

Communicative objectives:

The objective of this activity is that you learn how to:
– Express opinions.
– Make comparisons.

Situation:
Someone has asked you to have a look at some works of art and decide whether they can be considered ‘art’ or not.

Task:
Work in pairs. Discuss and decide from the document attached which pictures can be considered a ‘work of art’ and which not. You should give at least 2 reasons for each picture.

Then, you can ask each other the following questions:

Which work of art from the list do you like the most? Why?
Do you have a favourite artist? Why do you like his/her art?
What makes something a “work of art”?

Grammar:

– Comparatives and Superlatives adjectives.
– Present tense (Present Simple or Present Continuous)
– Past tense (Past Simple or Present Perfect)
– Structures expressing preference: like, dislike, prefer, rather…

Vocabulary:

– Types of works of art: painting, sculpture, portrait, landscape, artistic installation, photograph, montage, collage…
– Adjectives related to art: abstract/ figurative, modern/ traditional, realistic/ non-realistic/ surrealistic…
– Adjectives to express opinion: unique, extremely beautiful, touching, expensive, thought-provoking, powerful…

Communicative objectives:

The objective of this activity is to give you practice in:
-Giving your opinion about something.
-Describing a picture and linking it to a corresponding text.
-Commenting on your personal experience regarding the topic

Task:
Attached you have an advertisement about airlines. In pairs give your personal opinion and try to link the image with the text.

Suggested vocabulary:
You can discuss about some of these topics:
-holidays
-weddings and honeymoons
-student trips
-tourism
-countries and nationalities
-travel agents
-tour operators
-transports

Tips:
First, have a look at the picture and the headline. What do they suggest about the topic of the ad? Then, read the text. What do you think? Do you both agree or disagree? You can also tell each other about your personal experiences regarding the topic. Before you start with the task, you may want to look up for the words you don’t know in the dictionary.

Communicative objectives:

The objective of this activity is that you learn how to:

– Express likes and dislikes about different places, events and food
– Explain past experiences
– Report what another person said before

Situation:
You have just come back from your honeymoon and you are dying to tell your best friend all about it. After having a long bath, you ring your friend and arrange to meet him/her in a bar near your house.

Task:
Tell your friend ALL about your holidays (the country you visited, the culture, the food, the monuments, funny experiences, scary experiences, etc.)

Grammar:
– Quantifiers (e.g. too, enough, not much, quite, etc.)
– Reported speech (tense changes, time expressions)
– Reporting verbs (e.g. say, tell, refuse, accept, explain, repeat, etc.)
– Simple past v. past continuous (regular and irregular verbs; was/were + V-ing)

Honeymoon

Communicative objectives:

The objective of this activity is that you learn how to:
– Express preferences, likes and dislikes about different places
– Make choices and comparisons
– Make plans

Situation:
After a few arguments…you have finished all the preparations for your wedding! Now, you just need to “struggle” a bit more to find a wonderful place for a romantic (or not?!) honeymoon.

Task:
Decide where you would like to spend your honeymoon. Talk about your preferences, and give all the details of what you want to do during your trip. Oh!, and don’t forget to mention the amount of money that you’d like to spend…!

Grammar:
– Quantifiers (e.g. too, enough, not much, quite, etc.)
– Future forms (present continuous, “(to) be going to+Infinitive”, will+infinitive)
– Conditional to express preferences (e.g. I’d like to + infinitive)

Organise your wedding

The objective of this activity is that you learn how to:
– Express preferences, likes and dislikes about, events, places, objects, etc.
– Describe objects, celebrations, etc.
– Make choices and comparisons.
– Make plans.

Situation:
You’ve been going out with your boyfriend/girlfriend for five years, and you think it’s about time you ge married. You have not mentioned this idea to anybody, not even to your parents or best friends! You do not want to get them involved in the preparations for the wedding, so you want to keep it secret until everything is ready.

Task:
Organise your wedding! Talk about as many details as possible. For example, choose the type of celebration you’d like, a place for the ceremony (a church, a town hall, a garden, etc.), a restaurant, the invitations, your presents, etc.

Grammar:
– Quantifiers (e.g. too, enough, not much, quite, etc.)
– Future forms (present continuous, “(to) be going to+Infinitive”, will+infinitive)
– Conditional sentences (e.g. If I win the lottery, I will buy a car; if I won the lottery, I would buy a car; if I had won the lottery, I would have bought a car)
