Illustration essay

Communicative Objective:
To learn what the characteristics of an illustration essay are and then to learn how to write one.

Task:
Read the following explanations and then do the final exercise.

What is an illustration essay? The illustration essay is mostly used in college writing and in business. It is used to develop a main point wit examples and also in job applications for giving examples of your achievements.
Writers often use illustration in order to develop a paragraph they exemplify in the topic sentence. There are some useful transitional expressions for illustration:
– For instance, …
– For example…
– An illustration of this…
– A case in point is…
– To illustrate…
– Another instance of…
– Another example of…
– Another illustration of…
– Here are a few examples… (illustrations, instances)

A good illustration essay must start with a well known or well researched topic. The topic is the most important thing, so, for this reason you may practise first some brainstorming, clipping or asking questions in order to find a suitable topic. Try to learn a lot about it. Remember that the topic should be in the body of the essay as in many research papers. Always bear in mind that you will have an audience so you have to entertain them. In conclusion writing an illustration paper is after all, knowing perfectly what are you talking about and trying to make it interesting.

Objectives:

With this activity you will learn to write a persuasive essay using connectors.

Task:
Write a pesuasive essay by looking at the following instructions and using the transitional expressions and connectors attached.

Instructions:

1.-Look through the list of different types of connectors.

2.-Imagine there is a proposal to ban smoking in all public places including restaurants and bars being debated in the Catalan government. The government has decided to collect the opinions of the citizens and you have been asked to voice your thoughts. Use the transitional expressions attached to write a short essay stating your opinion on the smoking ban. Use the following structure to organize your ideas:

• Introduction (short; state your personal opinion: for or against the ban; state your 3 reasons)
• 1st point (state the 1st reason and why that’s important)
• 2nd point (state the 2nd reason and why that’s important)
• 3rd point (state the 3rd reason and why that’s important)
• Conclusion (short; restate your personal opinion and your reasons)

3.-Once you finish, check spelling, punctuation, cohesion and coherence.
