Relocating for Work

Communicative Objective: The purpose of this activity is to allow you to practice persuasive conversation.

Situation: Your company has offered you a promotion and double your current salary. However, you must move from London to Manchester, and your wife and kids don’t want to leave London.

Task: Take turns playing the husband and wife´s role as for why (and why not) the family should move to Manchester.

Communicative Objective: this activity will help you to recognize common speech sounds in English and their meanings.

Task: look at the attached page. Read through it, say the terms aloud, and try to construct sentences using the terms listed.

Tip:you might like to write some of the words on Google Translate and use the audio button to hear the terms aloud.

Going on Vacation!

Communicative Objective: this activity will allow you to practice making holiday plans.

Situation: you have won an all expenses paid holiday for two weeks, so you can go to any of the travel destinations listed below. What kind of vacation appeals most to you? A quiet vacation in the French countryside, a tropical vacation in Bali, Hawaii with the family, or the party island of Ibiza?

Task: in pairs, explain to your partner what you would do in each destination (what is the main attraction(s) for you), who you´d like to go with to these places, and why you would like to go there.

20 Questions

Idioma: anglès
Nivell: B2.1 / B2.2 / C1.1 (nivell 4,5 i 6)
Destresa: parla

Communitative Objective: by the end of the activity you will learn how to appropriately ask questions in the proper tense and form.

Task: work in pairs or in groups. One person thinks of a word while the other person can ask up to twenty questions to try and figure out what the word is.  The secret word can be anything.  As one person asks the questions, the other has to try to respond using one word answers to discover the answer. After 20 questions and no right answer then the player loses.

My Favorite Movie…

Communitative objective: the purpose of this activity is to practice descriptions and improve story telling abilities.

Situation: imagine that you have just seen your favourite movie for the first time.  You are so excited that you want to tell everybody about it so that everybody can  see it as well.

Task: describe your favorite movie with enough detail and description that your partner should be able to name the film if he/she has seen it.  The person describing the movie should be able to describe the characters, plot, possible meanings of the film, etc.  The listener should ask questions so that he/she may be able to find out what the person´s favorite movie is.

Telling Stories

Idioma: anglès

Communitative Objective: by the end of this activity you will know the appropriate way to recount events in your life and tell them to others in English.

Situation: imagine that you and a friend are at a dinner party where there are a lot of people that you do not know.  You notice that many of the guests are mingling with each and telling one another interesting stories that happened to them in their lives.  Wanting to be included, you think of the most memorable event that occurred in your life so that you may be able to tell the guests your interesting story and feel included.

Task: Think of an interesting story from your life.  Some ideas include:

  • a funny thing that happened when you were young
  • a lucky escape
  • an embarrassing moment
  • your best day ever
  • a romantic evening
  • an adventure while travelling

It is important to address  Who, What, When, Where, Why and How when telling a story. (Who was there, What happenend, when did it happen, where did it happen, etc…)

Tell your story, and after you are finished telling your story, try to retell an interesting story that happened to a friend of yours.  If you are working with a partner then listen to his/her story. If you work in a group, take turns retelling each other´s story.

Lost Tourist!

Communitative Objective: with this activity you will improve your ability to give directions.

Situation: imagine you just left your apartment and you are on your way to work when a lost tourist approaches you and asks for directions.  You feel bad that this person is lost so you decide to give the tourist directions to wherever he/she needs to go.

Task: you and a partner will work in pairs and take turns playing the role of the helper and the tourist.  The person acting as the tourist will pick a location that both people are familiar with and then the person playing the helper will give detailed directions on how to get to the said location.

Here is a list of useful vocabulary that is used to give and ask directions.

Police Report

Idioma: anglès
Nivell: B2.1 / B2.2 / C1.1 (nivell 4,5 i 6)

Communitative Objective: you will learn how to vividly describe somebody’s appearance and point out certain characteristics.

Situation: you are doing some grocery shopping at a store when a person comes in and robs the store! The police arrive at the scene after the crime to find that you are the only witness and only chance to help catch the criminal.

Task: work in pairs, one plays the witness and the other plays the policeman. Look at the pictures first. The “witness” will choose the suspect out of the photos attached on the link below.  The witness will then give a description of the suspect to the “policeman” while the policeman listens to the descriptions.  After a vivid description, the policeman will then have to guess which out of the selected photos is the person that committed the crime based on the description.

Sick Day

Communitative Objective: In this activity you will learn how to discuss your problems and improve your ability to reason with others.

Situation: You just woke up from a long night last night only to discover that you are feeling the most ill today than any other day in your life.  Furthermore, you realize you have to go to work today.  Therefore, you have to call your boss and tell him/her why you cannot come in to work today.

Task: Work in pairs. One person will be the sick employee and the other will be the boss.  The sick employee has to explain to the boss about his/her condition while providing reasons why he/she can´t work while the person playing the boss must listen and then try to convince the employee that he/she must still come in to work.

Article: Going to a Job Interview

Communitative Objective: the purpose of this activity is to improve your reading skills and vocabulary about a specific topic as well as to be able to talk and discuss about the ideas of a given text.

Task: Read the article attached to the activity.  First write down all the words in the article that you did not understand and use this website to find the definitions.  After you are done reading, discuss about the article’s main points with a partner.  You might like to use the questions at the end of the article to help guide your conversation if you have trouble.
