Motivation

Objectives :
With this activity you will learn how to use the third conditional.

Situation :
You work for a multinational company and the big boss has complained about your branch since the results of the first trimester are not as good as he expected. He has ordered you to reach 20% increase on sales or else your branch will be closed. In order to achieve it, you need to motivate your employees making them think about their mistakes and the possible solutions.

Task :

  • If you are the boss: Ask your employees about issues to be improved.
  • If you are the employee: Using the 3rd. conditional try to say what can be imrpoved, both on the company and your own side, and how.

Vocabulary:

Use vocabulary to express your beliefs and opinions.

Grammar:

e.g. “I think that we would have worked harder if you had given us a pay rise” or “If I had been more aggressive, I would have sold more products”

When you are lost

Communicative Objectives:

This conversation will help you to learn:
– How to describe your location yourself in a place
– How to ask for directions when you are lost

– How to give directions

Situation:
You are visiting a city and after some hours walking you realise that you are lost. You have a map but you cannot situate yourself.

Task:
Work in pairs/groups and see the Map. One of you ask the other(s) where exactly are you and the others should answer. Moreover, you should ask how to arrive to the different places you would like to visit.

Communicative Objectives:

The objective of this activity is that you learn:

  • How to argument your ideas
  • How to persuade other people

Situation:

A group of Astronauts has landed on the moon, but has become separated from the main party at the base station.  The group has 200 miles to cover in order to reach it, and limited supplies.

Task:

Work in groups. Each one of you look at this list of items.  It is your job to get to an agreement in ranking the items in order of importance for your survival.  If you have a different order of numbers than your neighbour, justify your reasoning to convince your partners.

Election of the students’ council President

Objectives:
With this activity students will learn how to criticize or support other people’s ideas as well as supporting theirs.

Situation:
Students are worried about some issues that concern them like the dates of the exams, having time enough to study, etc. In order to make things better, the election of the president of the students’ council is going to take place.

Task:
Take notes for a speech to explain the reasons why you should be elected as president. A wide range of ideas should be prepared in order to persuade the rest of the students.

If you are in a group, other students can ask questions about your programme.

Grammar:

If you elect me, I will change the exams schedule.

  • Revise the use of “will/won’t” in order to express future

I will change as many things as you ask me.

Vocabulary:
You may use vocabulary concerning character description as well as some vocabulary related to university life and certain expressions to express dis/agreement.

Being a seller for a day

Communicative objectives:

With this activity the student will learn how to:

–         Use the basic tips to initiate a conversation

–         Introduce yourself to a stranger

Situation:

Imagine you are a seller and you have to go house-by-house trying to sell an encyclopaedia. You need to reach a minimum amount of sells in order to get an extra pay and this month you just need to sell one more to get it.

Task:

Work in pairs/groups. One of you will have to assume the role of the seller while the other/s will be the customer. You have to be nice to the customer if you want him/her to buy your product, some things you could do are:

– talk to the client about your day or asking the client about his/hers.
– offering a discount.

– giving a present for the purchase.

Grammar:

Present continuous:      What are you doing? I’m cooking the dinner

Future Forms:              You will learn about everything you need to know

I’m going to show you the best encyclopaedia

Vocabulary:

Expressing apologies and thanks: (e.g. I’m sorry, I apologise for… Thank you very much, I really appreciate it…)

Applying for a job

This conversation will help you to learn:

Situation:
You have already finished your studies and you need to apply for a job, because you want to live by yourself. After doing some research, you have found a six-month job offer available in the United Kingdom. It’s a very interesting job, and you would like to get it. It is a great opportunity, so you can’t let it go.

Task:

You have to talk about what you have done recently, where you have been working before, what you have studied and where. If you want to get the job, try to show interest and speak as much polite as possible.

Situation:
You and your best friend are planning a trip. However, it is more difficult than it seemed to be. He/she wants to spend the first three weeks of August in the USA, and she also wants to buy the tickets through a travel agency. However, you think it would be better to spend the first two weeks in Ireland buying the tickets through the internet because you know it would be cheaper.

Task:
Discuss when are you going abroad (dates), where are you going to go (place), how much are you going to spend (money) and where are you going to buy your tickets.

Task:
Work in pairs. What do you think about riding a bike in the city? Write a short list of advantages and disadvantages of riding a bike in the city. Task

Work in pairs:
Person nº1: Describe the perfect place where you would like to live. You can completely make it up or you can base your description on a place you have already visited. Take into account the weather, people living there, facilities, etc.

Person nº2: Express the points you disagree with. After this, it is your turn to explain the place where you would hate to live.

After that, exchange roles.
