The goal of this activity is that students learn from the mistakes done in a composition after having revised it.

Task:

Write a letter of about 150 words in replay to the advert. After a while, check the writing trying to answer the following questions:

Checklist for revising paragraphs:

1.      Can the reader follow my ideas?

2.      Is the topic sentence clear?

3.      Is the topic sentence fully supported by facts and details?

4.      Does the paragraph develop just one idea?

5.      Is it coherent and consistent?

6.      Are there any vocabulary mistakes?

7.      Are there any grammar mistakes?

Checklist for revising the essay:

1.      Is the topic well narrowed down?

2.      Does the body of the essay support coherently the ideas?

3.      Does the paragraph follow a logical order?

4.      Has the essay a conclusion?

Motivation

Objectives :
With this activity you will learn how to use the third conditional.

Situation :
You work for a multinational company and the big boss has complained about your branch since the results of the first trimester are not as good as he expected. He has ordered you to reach 20% increase on sales or else your branch will be closed. In order to achieve it, you need to motivate your employees making them think about their mistakes and the possible solutions.

Task :

  • If you are the boss: Ask your employees about issues to be improved.
  • If you are the employee: Using the 3rd. conditional try to say what can be imrpoved, both on the company and your own side, and how.

Vocabulary:

Use vocabulary to express your beliefs and opinions.

Grammar:

e.g. “I think that we would have worked harder if you had given us a pay rise” or “If I had been more aggressive, I would have sold more products”

This conversation will help you to learn:

– How to ask for directions when you are lost

Situation:
You are visiting a city and after some hours walking you realise that you are lost. You have a map but you cannot situate yourself.

Task:
Work in pairs/groups and see the Map. One of you ask the other(s) where exactly are you and the others should answer. Moreover, you should ask how to arrive to the different places you would like to visit.

The objective of this activity is that you learn:

  • How to argument your ideas
  • How to persuade other people

Situation:

A group of Astronauts has landed on the moon, but has become separated from the main party at the base station.  The group has 200 miles to cover in order to reach it, and limited supplies.

Task:

Work in groups. Each one of you look at this list of items.  It is your job to get to an agreement in ranking the items in order of importance for your survival.  If you have a different order of numbers than your neighbour, justify your reasoning to convince your partners.

Election of the students’ council President

Objectives:
With this activity students will learn how to criticize or support other people’s ideas as well as supporting theirs.

Situation:
Students are worried about some issues that concern them like the dates of the exams, having time enough to study, etc. In order to make things better, the election of the president of the students’ council is going to take place.

Task:
Take notes for a speech to explain the reasons why you should be elected as president. A wide range of ideas should be prepared in order to persuade the rest of the students.

If you are in a group, other students can ask questions about your programme.

Grammar:

If you elect me, I will change the exams schedule.

  • Revise the use of “will/won’t” in order to express future

I will change as many things as you ask me.

Vocabulary:
You may use vocabulary concerning character description as well as some vocabulary related to university life and certain expressions to express dis/agreement.
