Check your writing

Communicative Objective:

The goal of this activity is that students learn from the mistakes done in a composition after having revised it.

Task:

Write a letter of about 150 words in replay to the advert. After a while, check the writing trying to answer the following questions:

Checklist for revising paragraphs:

1.      Can the reader follow my ideas?

2.      Is the topic sentence clear?

3.      Is the topic sentence fully supported by facts and details?

4.      Does the paragraph develop just one idea?

5.      Is it coherent and consistent?

6.      Are there any vocabulary mistakes?

7.      Are there any grammar mistakes?

Checklist for revising the essay:

1.      Is the topic well narrowed down?

2.      Does the body of the essay support coherently the ideas?

3.      Does the paragraph follow a logical order?

4.      Has the essay a conclusion?

Narrative essay

Objectives:
To learn what a narrative essay is and then to learn how to write one.

Task:

Read the following explanations and example of a narrative essay and then make the suggested exercise.

Definition and details of a narrative essay:

– The narrative essay tells a story. It can also be called a “short story.” Generally the narrative essay is conversational in style, and tells of a personal experience. It is most commonly written in the first person (uses I).

– The story, as many texts, should have an introduction and also a conclusion which makes a point.

– You can write anecdotes which are always good in essays of this kind. Note that in a narrative essay you should give loads of details about the characters, the events, places etc.

– As we said before use first person, the use of “I” makes us believe that everything is much more intimate.

– Be organized, use details but do not exaggerate. Once you have finished revise all the words and check if you can use synonyms in order to not repeating words.

Objectives:

With this activity you will learn to write a persuasive essay using connectors.

Task:
Write a pesuasive essay by looking at the following instructions and using the transitional expressions and connectors attached.

Instructions:

1.-Look through the list of different types of connectors.

2.-Imagine there is a proposal to ban smoking in all public places including restaurants and bars being debated in the Catalan government. The government has decided to collect the opinions of the citizens and you have been asked to voice your thoughts. Use the transitional expressions attached to write a short essay stating your opinion on the smoking ban. Use the following structure to organize your ideas:

• Introduction (short; state your personal opinion: for or against the ban; state your 3 reasons)
• 1st point (state the 1st reason and why that’s important)
• 2nd point (state the 2nd reason and why that’s important)
• 3rd point (state the 3rd reason and why that’s important)
• Conclusion (short; restate your personal opinion and your reasons)

3.-Once you finish, check spelling, punctuation, cohesion and coherence.
