Alzheimer

foto18.jpg

Idioma: anglès
Nivell: B2.2 / C1.1 (nivell 5 i 6)
Destresa: parla

Communicative objectives:

This activity presents you with a hypothetical situation and asks you to consider what you would do were you in that situation. Completing this exercise will help you express your opinions orally, acquire new vocabulary and use more elevated grammatical structures.

Task:
Your aunt has Alzheimer’s and now lives in a nursing home, where people can take care of her 24-hours a day. Whenever you visit her, she demands to know why you never come to see her and sometimes she even cries. The reality is that you have been visiting her weekly since she was put in the “home.” How do you respond to her, both verbally and in your future actions, ie. do you continue to visit her?

Vocabulary:
Alzheimer’s disease: a degenerative disease of the central nervous system characterized especially by premature senile mental deterioration.
taken from Mish, F. (Ed.). (1988). Webster’s Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary. Springfield, MA: Merriam-Webster, Inc.

Recommendation:
Before engaging in this simulation, look in the dictionary and/or thesaurus for necessary vocabulary. You might like to check the Merriam Webster Visual dictionary (Health section). If working with a partner, arguing opposing views may make for a more interesting and stimulating conversation.
