When I willingly accepted the challenge of writing a contribution on the iconography of the Mediterranean in the Middle Ages, I was also conscious of the difficulty of covering such a topic. So, I have decided to focus my paper on two specific aspects of this subject. The first part of my contribution will review the role played by the Mediterranean in the visual arts from Antiquity to Middle Ages. In the second part, I will highlight the role of the Kingdom of Aragon and its overseas expansion during the 13th and 14th centuries in the transformation of the image of the Mediterranean. In all this process, it is worth drawing attention to the relationship that existed between the political and commercial interests of an expanding kingdom and the promotion of certain Mediterranean cults and cult centres.
